This expert review was commissioned to provide timely guidance on a topic of high clinical importance to the AGA membership and underwent internal peer review by the CPU Committee and external peer review through standard procedures of Gastroenterology.

This review addresses the common indications for use of parenteral nutrition, the composition of parenteral nutrition, and the possible complications encountered with parenteral nutrition use, as well as scenarios of inappropriate parenteral nutrition use among patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

The article provides an updated review of the definition, prevalence, causes, and clinical management of malnutrition in inflammatory bowel disease.
